A recent newspaper article which may tend to reflect the general sentiment regarding speed cameras.
Food for thought
Exceeding the speed limit from time to time and deliberately speeding are totally different matters.
Those intentionally speeding are calculating and watching out for speed cameras while those driving safely are more concerned with getting from point 'A' to point 'B' as safely as possible.
Might it be a better system for an individual to receive a speeding fine if caught exceeding the limit a predetermined number of times within a given period, this would net less money but may be considered a fairer system.
This method might indicate that the individual drives consistently above the limit and not just a once off event.
Operating the system this way may also improve safety by reducing the stress of watching the speedo instead of the road.
It appears to be evident from the statistics shown in Dobadriver that 'Speeding' is much less of a problem than indicated by some.... Dangerous Driving being the main category.... but it would most likely be more difficult to extract money from that particular problem !
Tailgating is the practice of driving on a road too close to the vehicle in front, at a distance which does not guarantee that stopping to avoid collision is possible. Approximately one third of rear-end collisions involve tailgating.
(Ref_ Wikipedia)
Should you become the victim of a tailgater, don't antagonise the situation by returning the aggressive behaviour, simply take the appropriate action to allow the person to go by. Remember, your safety and that of your passengers is of prime importance and it is not advisable to attempt to teach them a lesson.
Pay back mentality may only make a bad situation worse. Tailgating creates a stressful situation and one which inevitably causes people to make mistakes they would not normally do, therefore allow them to pass by without incident.....it's the sensible thing to do.
If you feel it is warranted, take down the details and either report it to the Police or make a report to Dobadriver.
